NEWS
24 March 2014: Gave an invited presentation at the Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences and Atmospheric Sciences Research Center Joint Colloquium Series entitled "Understanding decadal rainfall variability in West Africa using CMIP5 models".
10 March 2014: Paper entitled "Sahel Rainfall in Multimodel CMIP5 Decadal Hindcasts" has been accepted for publication in Geophysical Research Letters and is currently available via "Early View" on the GRL website and on my publications page.
14-15 January 2014: As part of the SUNY-UWI collaboration and successful awarding of seed funding I, along with three faculty members hosted four visitors from the University of the West Indies Mona (Jamaica) and Cave Hill (Barbados) campuses. Short presentations from all members of the collaboration as well as other interested parties in the department and ASRC occurred on Tuesday and more in depth discussion of future research directions on Wednesday. It was a very successful visit and I look forward to continuing this international collaboration in the future.

9-13 December 2013: Attended the 2013 AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco, California. I presented a poster in a section of decadal variability and a talk in the West African monsoon and its modeling section. View both presentations here.
11 November 2013: As part of sustainability week on the campus of UAlbany, I hosted a forum along with research associate professor Oliver Elison Timm on "Impacts of Climate Change: Overview of the National Climate Assessment" with a focus on climate change impacts in the Northeast United States.
18 September 2013: Gave a series of three guest lectures to ATM306 (climate variability and change) on decadal climate variability. Topics included the importance of decadal climate variability with respect to long term trends, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and its impacts, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the relatively new field of decadal predictions and hindcasts. Activities including the cube, minute papers, student-student discussions and learning evaluations were used with great success.
9 September 2013: Paper entitled "The Multidecadal Atlantic SST - Sahel Rainfall Teleconnection in CMIP5 Simulations" by Elinor R. Martin, Chris Thorncroft and Ben B.B. Booth has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Climate. Find a copy here.
6-10 July 2013: Attended the "Preparing for an Academic Career in the Geosciences" workshop in Boulder, CO run by On The Cutting Edge, National Association of Geoscience Teachers.
17 June 2013: Proposal entitled "Caribbean Rainfall Variability and Climate Change", coauthored with University of the West Indies and SUNY Albany faculty was selected for seed funding from UWI and SUNY. Look out for more on this soon!
21 January 2013: Gave a colloquium in the Department of Meteorology at Penn State entitled "West African Decadal Rainfall Variability: Links with SSTs in CMIP5 Models".
2 January 2013: Paper entitled "The impact of the AMO on the West African Monsoon Annual Cycle" has been accepted for publication in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. A copy of the paper can be found here.
7 November 2012: Finished giving a series of three guest lectures to ATM306 (climate variability and change) on decadal climate variability. Topics included the importance of decadal climate variability with respect to long term trends, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and its impacts, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the relatively new field of decadal predictions and hindcasts.
2 November 2012: The first official climate research group meeting was held today in DAES 328. This is a group of faculty, scientists, postdocs and students from the department and ASRC with interests in climate. Please contact me if you would like to be involved in our biweekly meetings.
17 September 2012: I recently returned from the "International Workshop on Interdecadal Variability of the Global Monsoons" in Nanjing, China where I presented a poster titled "Multi-Decadal Variability of West African Rainfall and Atlantic SSTs in CMIP5 Simulations". A copy of the poster can be found on the publications and presentations page. The meeting website is here.
